Life Saved At Stonewall Golf Club. Access To Aed And Knowledge Of Cpr Made The Difference!
If someone in your foursome collapsed on the thirteenth hole, would you know what to do? Luckily for one grateful golfer at Stonewall Golf Club, members of his group and several of the employees did. When the guest from New York City collapsed just a few days ago and was non-responsive, the member's caddy, John May, ran to the clubhouse to get help. Guest Frank Mclaughlin, Executive Director of Athletics at Fordham University, and member Joe Seufer gave CPR to their friend and member of their golf group. Assistant pro, Rob Bishop, golf shop assistant, Rick Coconuts, and club bartender, Tony Biggins, grabbed the course's automated external defibrillator (AED) and headed out to help. States Bishop, "When we arrived, he was clearly not alive. Recognizing he could have suffered from sudden cardiac arrest (SCA), we hooked him up to the AED. When it confirmed a shock needed to be administered, we did. He immediately began gasping and coughing. It was an amazing experience." an AED can mean the difference between life and death. SCA differs from a heart attack in that it arrives without warning and leaves its victim unconscious within seconds; death follows in minutes. The chance of an SCA victim's survival decreases by 10 percent for every minute that passes. Rapid intervention is essential to survival – often difficult to provide in remote areas such as out on the golf course. In fact, it was approximately seven minutes after the shock was administered before professional responders arrived. Golf courses rank in the top five places where sudden cardiac arrest most often occurs. AEDs are becoming more common in public places, but there is still a need for increased awareness. According to Mark Victor M.D., Clinical Professor of Medicine at Drexel University and CardioReady® Board of Advisor, "Once again the remarkable success of an AED at a public venue like a golf course highlights the importance of public access to defibrillators and trained laypersons, such as the quick-thinking heroes at Stonewall." Norman Norris, Stonewall member and CardioReady® Board of Advisor member, spoke with the victim by phone, "He is at home now and doing well. He is very pleased the club had the foresight to have a defibrillator program in place."
